"Beware of the Dog" Questions

1. The pilot compares his injury to "a mess which happened to be there in the cockpit; something strange and unusual and rather interesting."  This simile reveals the fact that the pilot is nonchalant about the entire situation of injuring his leg. He's almost eccentric in that he laughs at the thought of it all and what will happen when others see his leg.
2. The reputation of "I'm going to pass out" heightens the suspense of the story in that we are soon put back into reality. One second, we enter the pilots careless thoughts and the next we're back in the plane. We are soon asking ourselves, "How long has the pilot been in this situation", and despite his thoughts, "is he really on the verge of death"?
3. I think the pilot is afraid he will land in water because not only is he soon going to fall unconscious and possibly drown because he can't swim, but he makes himself a target for any French pilots who are after him.
4. I think after the pilot described the clouds and sun as whiteness and blackness he began to fall through the skies and soon grow closer to land, which may have constituted for the black that he began to see.
5. The details in the second column help reveal the time period and background of the author in that he mentions the fact that the german solider shouldn't have been flying around alone, or at least have had some weaponry. From this, the reader can conclude that a war or any battle was taking place at the time.
6. Making Inferences 598: If the planes were German bombers, that could signify trouble. It could signify the spread of the battle. From the nurse's actions, I can infer that she is trying to keep the pilot from worrying. I think she is trying to prevent him from taking any actions(making a phone call) that would cause the battle to begin in Brighton.
7. Making Inferences 599: I think the pilot thinks the nurse is lying about where he is. I think he thinks he is somewhere other than Brighton.
8. From the pilots actions, I can infer that he is determined and scared. Also, that he does not trust people easily, that he is skeptical. Despite the pain he felt, his determination urged him to go on and satisfy his curiosity so that he'd be less skeptical and know things for himself.
9. Making Inferences 601: The pilot believes he is in france because of the words on the sign, they say "beware of the dog" in french. Also, his countryside, orchard surroundings make him believe he is in France.
10. Making inferences 603: I can infer that the pilot believes he is in a set-up. I think he realizes this and so he only says what his squadron officer would've told him to say.
11.  Thinking Critically #6.  After having read this story, I can infer that the character has an uneasy character. He is tentative, skeptical, determined, and a bit eccentric. Even though he has doubt, he doesn't let that overtake him. At the end of the story, he has made the right decision and given no unnecessary information to a person he didn't know.
